Opossum facts and info
The opossum lived during the Age of the Dinosaurs. Fossil remains have been found from 70 million years ago! This means that the opossum is part of the Earth's oldest surviving mammal family. Their unspecialized biology, flexible diet and reproductive strategy make them successful colonizers and survivors in diverse locations and conditions. Originally native to the eastern United States, the opossum was intentionally introduced into the West during the great depression probably as a source of food.
They have over 50 teeth, and they will show you if you approach them, however the opossum is mostly a docile creature not know for attacking people or pets. It is very rare that a opossum will carry rabies, however it is an unvaccinated creature so you should always keep your distance and call the professionals to do the dirty work. Opossums cannot jump. An opossum may get into a trash can only if it has been knocked over by another animal, or if it's against a fence and the opossum drops into it, which can trap the opossum in the trash can. The opossum doesn't have a permanent nest because it is nocturnal and transient. It will spend an average of 2-3 days in the same hideout, then move on. Some weeks later it may return to the same place, depending on the conformability. If you have a opossum shacked up at your home, it will most likely return if you are even the slightest bit hospitable.
Tips to deterring opossums, and keeping opossums away from your house.
If you don't want opossums around your house the you can follow some simple steps to prevent this problem. Initially you will want to hire a professional to remove the creatures from your property. Call All City Animal Trapping today at (877)724-5314. We also suggest that you pick up all pet food, keep a tight lid on all garbage cans, pick fruit as soon as it is ripe or pick it up soon after it falls to the ground, block holes in fences and buildings with wire or wood, and you can try to soak rags in ammonia and strategically place them around the area you are trying to keep opossums from entering. The smell of ammonia is annoying to opossums and will sometimes drive them away.
Pointers if you come across or rescue a young opossum.
The Opossum is a marsupial which means that they carry their young in a pouch, much like a kangaroo. It is very common to see a mother opossum with a bunch of babies crawling on her, or even a little estranged baby opossum that fell off in the yard. If you find a baby opossum and want to help it, put it in a box so it is dark and warm, then contact a wildlife rescue company.
We had a customer in Los Angeles who called in because she was hearing noises from the bushes on her back patio, late at night she would see six sets of red eyes peering at her. Trapper Bob did a complete inspection of her property and surely found the opossums hideout. He removed a mother and her 5 babies from a bush behind the customers Jacuzzi. the opossum family was safely relocated to a near-bye greenbelt, where they lived comfortably without making this woman uncomfortable!

Opossums have soft, rounded opposable thumbs with no fingernails
on their hind feet.
Opossums do not dig holes, as their paws are very soft and tender,
much like a human hand.
Opossums may drool, growl and show their 50 teeth when frightened, but in reality are
placid and prefer to avoid any confrontation.
They are slow-moving with very sensitive hearing and smell, opossums are not territorial and will adapt to any environment where food, water and shelter exist.
Opossums do not hand by their tails-the tail stabilizes their position while climbing and

Besides their natural predators in the wild, humans, cars and cats are the demise for this docile creature. Very few survive to adulthood, and usually live only 1-2 years if they do.
"Playing Possum" is one of the most effective ways the opossums defends itself. When unable to flee, extreme fear places the opossum into an involuntary coma. They become stiff and their mouths will gape open. This condition will last 40 minutes to 4 hours. Most predators will abandon their attack, once the opossum is thought to be dead.
Opossum fur coloring is most commonly gray, but can range with white and cinnamon to black.
Baby opossums are usually born between the months of February and June.
